Even if a salesperson works with you in store or virtually, Meade’s cannot be responsible for any measures or builds unless we have been on jobsite, and you have purchased a measure from Meade’s. We will build to the measurements given during an order.
Replacement or New Construction Descriptions:
There is no cost difference between these when buying from Meade’s. However, they are used for different purposes and are constructed and installed differently.
Replacement Windows:
Replacement windows (also referred to as retrofit windows) have been developed so a contractor does not have to remove the exterior materials of the home in order to install the window; they are measured to fit in an existing window opening and will only replace the actual sashes of the window.
New construction Windows:
New construction windows are used when a brand new home or a new addition to a home is being built. Since the studs of the home are exposed the window can be installed directly on to the frame by use of a nail fin frame, which means it is nailed into the framing of the home.
Single Hung, Double Hung, Fixed or Slider Descriptions:
Single Hung Window:
A single-hung window, also known as a single-sash window, is a type of window with a lower, operable sash and an upper, fixed sash. This means that the bottom part of the window slides up and down, while the top part remains stationary.
Double Hung Window:
A double-hung window, also commonly referred to as a double-sash window, is a type of window that has two operable sashes that slide up and down. There are two main operable parts of a double-hung window — the top sash and the bottom sash. They are both able to open to provide ventilation.
Fixed Window:
A fixed window is set in the closed position. It is stationary and cannot open (non-operational).
Slider Window:
A sliding window is a window that opens by sliding horizontally along a top and bottom track in the window frame. It can be single hung or double hung, which will dictate how many of the sashes move side to side. Sliding glass windows are often found in rooms where an unobstructed view of the outdoors is desired or where maximum ventilation is needed. Since they are easy to open from left and right, sliding windows are commonly found in spaces that are difficult to reach, such as above the kitchen sink or behind a soaking tub. They are also ideal for openings in which the width is greater than the height.

Basic Window Installation Pricing Estimates:
Why do we charge for our measures?:
Because our craftsmen are there to evaluate – not to sell.
We initially charge because these are EXPERT craftsmen whose time and experience have value. They are NOT salespeople. They get paid whether you buy a product from Meade’s or not. You will receive their guaranteed precise measurements and expert recommendations for your home via email soon after your visit.
Often, other companies will send employees only trained in sales or to read a tape measure to do the measurements. Unfortunately, without a trained eye on the existing opening, customers will often receive incorrect measurements, subtle problems will turn into big issues, or they purchase a product that will not fit properly. Most often, they will be given advice only to increase the sale, not what is best for the situation. And the employ of these outside sales staff usually increases the price of the product by 25%.
What to expect if you start with purchasing a Measure Only:
- Meade’s will contact you within 2 business days of purchase to set up your measure appointment.
- During the measure appointment, the expert will measure your opening, take pictures, and note any issues that might arise during install. They will make recommendations they deem necessary for Meade’s and the homeowner to consider when purchasing a new door or window.
- Within 2 business days of your measure, you will be emailed your measurements and contacted by Meade’s to discuss options for your project.
- Once you purchase an installation from Meade’s, your measure purchase is refunded.
- Your product is ordered, built, installed, and guaranteed to fit!
What to expect if you purchased a Measure/Install package WITH your new windows:
- Even though you have purchased a new door to be ordered or built, Meade’s will pause the order until the measure is completed to guarantee a fit.
- Meade’s will contact you within 2 business days of purchase to set up your measure appointment.
- During the measure appointment, the expert will measure your opening, take pictures, specify handing, and note any issues that might arise during install.
- Within 2 business days of your measure, you will be emailed your measurements and contacted by Meade’s to either confirm that the project is a go, or to offer other solutions found during the measure, i.e., replace with another product or a refund, if the window you purchased will not work with your opening.
- Then your product is ordered and built, and stained (if this add-on has been purchased).
- When the door is ready for install, Meade’s will reach out and schedule an installation date
- The installation will include the following:

- Clean up and haul away
- Full Scope of Labor for Installation

- When conventional glass breaks, it usually forms dangerous shards. When the glass is heated and rapidly cooled, it becomes tempered or safety glass. In most places, residential building codes answer the question of where is tempered windows (glass) necessary. But here are just a few places where it is necessary:
- The window measures more than nine square feet
- It has a bottom edge that’s under 18″ from the floor
- It has a top edge that’s more than three feet above the floor
- There’s a walkway within three feet
- It is near stairs, landing, or ramps
- In “wet areas” such as bathrooms
- When conventional glass breaks, it usually forms dangerous shards. When the glass is heated and rapidly cooled, it becomes tempered or safety glass. In most places, residential building codes answer the question of where is tempered windows (glass) necessary. But here are just a few places where it is necessary:
Upgrade the Frame:
- Make the window tan ($15%+)
- Other color upgrades are not offered at this time, but Sherwin Williams does offer paint for vinyl windows. Please refer to the warranty before painting and follow best industry practices.
- Add constant force balance to windows ($18+)
- A constant force window balance is the mechanism that allows windows to open and close smoothly. The balance allows the window to remain open without the use of a prop to hold it up. This balance system uses a stainless-steel coil like a tape measure to raise and lower the sash. However, all windows come with a BSI inverted constant force balance system for smooth sash raising and lowering.
Alternate Grid Design from 6/6 or 1/1:
- There is no additional fee for the below alternate grid designs. But our system will default to 1/1 for no grids and 6/6 pattern for grids unless you get a custom quote.
- Add external grids for SDL look and to meet some historical requirements ($33+ per lite)

Local Delivery:
- If you purchase an install from Meade’s, the installer will deliver your windows to be installed at no additional cost.
- Unfortunately, Meade’s does not offer a “delivery only” option.

Packaging and Shipping:
- Meade’s currently only offers shipping on very select items; HOWEVER, we will package and securely crate a product for shipping plus give you all the necessary information to arrange the shipping yourself.

- You can hire your own shipper, i.e., UPS, an LTL company, or brokerage services like Uship.com or shiply.com to ship your product. Their prices will vary but below is an estimate of packaging and shipping:
